Lever Actions: An American Rifle For Hunters
Lever actions are often presumed inaccurate or not precise enough for long-range shooting. But what defines “enough” accuracy or “long-range” shooting?

This 50-caliber muzzleloader is often the first choice for those looking to get into traditional black powder. Let’s get back to the basics as I spend some time with the Traditions Kentucky Rifle.
The Savage 110 family of rifles are known for their tried-and-true quality and dependability. This Long Range Hunter is no exception.
The Browning X-Bolt Speed SR delivered an awesome performance from a reasonably priced hunting rifle. Hence I wouldn’t hesitate a second to take this rifle out west for a trophy elk hunt or to Africa.
After 20 minutes of dissecting the canyon mouth with the glass, I spied a bull. He was over a mile-and-a-half away.
After some practice, no elk will be safe. I can’t wait to report on the rifle’s in-the-field performance soon.
“My first rifle was a 243” is a lyric from a great song. This is an article about putting together a first hunting rifle for my son. And yes, it ended up being a .243.
Enter the American-made VF-ORYX 22WMR by Volquartsen. This rifle is an absolute beast. The moment I picked it up, I could sense its precision. The modern design immediately caught my attention, but it was the performance that truly impressed me.
Taylor & Company Firearms is based in, of all places, Winchester Virginia. Unlike many other companies, Taylor does not actually manufacture any firearms. Instead, they partner with existing companies, such as Chiappa and Uberti, to market and sell exclusive models.
For those looking to find an affordable rifle chambered in the formidable 7mm PRC, Mossberg has you covered with the Patriot Predator.
While having no previous experience with a straight-pull rifle before testing this Savage, I have grown to love his design.
The world of hunting rifles tends to be relatively stable. We have single shots, bolt actions, lever guns, and a few semi-autos. Nothing crazy, and most hunters don’t seem to want anything crazy anyway. Well, Savage decided to shake things up with the Impulse. The Savage Impulse is a bolt action rifle but isn’t your traditional rotary bolt. Instead, Savage went with a straight-pull bolt.
y guarantee on the Lupo, and I found that to be true with all three brands of ammunition when shooting from 100 yards and off a sandbagged rest.
Elk are great movers, and during the rut, bulls will cover massive amounts of terrain in search of love. Be ready to traverse terrain and make a quick shot if you want to head home with horns for the wall and backstraps for the grill.
I carried the Waypoint with me last whitetail season, and I stretched its legs at the range. The Waypoint lived up to expectations, and it may be the perfect crossover rifle for both competition and hunting.
The success of any hunt falls on the shoulders of the shooter and their ability to properly place the bullet with accuracy. As marksmen and hunters, we want to be certain that we have done everything possible to make that first shot count. Having a well-fitted weapon system and good ammunition leaves it only up to the marksman to make it happen.

When Savage Arms released their Impulse straight-pull rifle in early 2021 I never imagined my 6.5 Creedmoor might be the first one to make it to the plains of Africa, or that my first-time hunting friend would claim first blood with it.
The Impulse Hog Hunter is a very accurate rifle, capable of taking game out to 400 yards without a problem. The straight-pull bolt operated effectively and actually got me on target faster for that follow-up shot.
There are as many differing opinions on what makes a great western hunting rifle, as there are western hunters.
Today, anything you buy from Christensen Arms has at least a sub-MOA guarantee and many of the models carry a ½ MOA guarantee. That’s an impressive feat for rifles that are extremely lightweight.
In part three let’s take a detailed look at the remaining essential gear, as well as great backcountry rifle setups. Remember; good quality gear lasts longer, works better, and offers the best chance of keeping you alive when the chips are down.
Airguns are not limited to what they used to be: guns for training children on gun safety. These days, airgun technology is advancing to the point where we can shoot heavier projectiles faster than ever before out of production rifles. Because of this, they are a great option to take out hunting! This Texan LSS .50 CF will produce up to 750 ft./lbs of energy, which is as much as a .357 Mag or 44 Mag in some cases. Yes, this is hard to believe, but not when you are holding a 600 grain slug in your hand.
The Mc3 stock by Mcmillan should be a top choice for your next weapon build. The Tradition by Mc3 for Remington 700 BDL models is constructed of a glass filled proprietary polymer.
I managed to get my hands on Seekins’ new Havak Element in 6.5 PRC soon after it was announced, and immediately put it through the hardest tests that I could think of: I brought it with me on several hunts including Idaho mule deer and whitetail deer.
Ruger has decided to enter the light-weight, long-range hunting rifle game with their appropriately named Hawkeye Long-Range Hunter Bolt Action Rifle. This gun is designed to be accurate, lightweight, user adjustable and tough. The light profile, stainless steel barrel contributes most to this rifle’s low weight and comes chambered in the most popular 6.5 calibers.
After looking the rifle over, I was very impressed with what I saw and felt. The rifle was hefty… and I mean really hefty. The bull barrel that this gun comes with adds a lot to it, but the advantage is that you can shoot all day and not see a change in accuracy. The stock felt good to me out of the box, but with the option to change the cheek riser and length of pull (LOP from here on out) I rearranged the stock so that it fit me perfectly.
Familiarizing yourself with your weapon system components and personal marksmanship ability is the best investment that you can make to notch that tag during hunting season.
Let’s face it, in the AR-15 world it’s easy to get lost in the vanilla black-rifle weeds. We reached a saturation point of sorts with semi-auto gas-operated systems quite a while ago, especially in terms of plain black rigs offered by “manufacturers” who simply assemble branded components provided by true third-party bulk-producers. Even so, some not-so-vanilla iterations have certainly risen above the others and deserve to be called out. The Brenton USA Ranger Carbon Hunter is one of them.
Built on the Browning’s X-Bolt action, the Max Long Range comes ready for long range.
Legendary Arms Works is back in business and that’s a good thing. They’ve made a great pair of rifles: The Professional and The Big Five.
