FN’s 509 CC Edge XL: Response to Customers’ Desires — SHOT Show 2024

A surprising trend recently is manufacturers making larger versions of small handguns. But it’s also refreshing to see them listening to user feedback.

FN’s 509 CC Edge XL is a result of listening to customers. Folks liked the compensated barrel on the 509 CC Edge so well, they requested it with a full-size grip, thus the “XL.”

The XL refers to the full-size grip.

Got a 509? Add the Compensator

FN listened and made the grip longer for this gun and also listened to folks who want the compensated barrel for their existing 509. They’ve now made the barrel and compensator an aftermarket accessory. You can replace your barrel and get, presumably, a better performance.

The compensator is a muzzle brake and directs some of the gases coming out of the barrel upward which counteracts the barrel’s rise during recoil. This helps the shooter re-acquire the target much faster and reduces felt recoil.

The compensated barrel is also available on its own.

Furthermore, the compensator is removable without tools for maintenance. Field strip the gun, then give the compensator a 1/4 twist and it comes off. The compensator and barrel are not listed on their sight yet but will be available this month for $349.

Cumulative Quality

This gun is packed with other excellent features that you’d probably want to add. Up front, it’s got windows in the slide that reduce the mass at the front and help reduce recoil. Plus a fiber optic front sight.

You can see the barrel through the windows. It is coated in titanium nitride which makes it corrosion resistant and extra smooth.

The windows in the slide reveal the titanium nitride-finished barrel.

At the back, the slide is cut for optics, and the blacked-out rear sight is tall enough to co-witness through the optic in case it fails.

It’s optics-ready and has tall sights for co-witnessing.

The 509 CC Edge XL is also ambidextrous out of the box. Unlike other guns that may allow you to swap the mag release to the right side, this gun has slide catches on both sides of the frame. Also, the mag release works from both sides without modification.

The slide catch and mag release are ambidextrous.

The trigger is flat-faced and breaks at 90° at just 4.5 – 6.7 lbs.

The trigger is crisp and straight.

The grip is covered with stippling and texture to help you keep it in your hands.

The grip is highly stippled.

It comes with 17-round mags but also takes 24-round 509 mags. The included mags are weighted in the base plate so they drop away faster. The flared mag well also aids speedy mag changes.

The mag holds 17 rounds and is weighted.

FN’s 509 CC Edge XL is full-size and full-featured. It’s available now with an MSRP set at $1,649.
