Barnes Bullets just released a new loading in 6.5 Grendel as well as a new 6.5mm bullet for reloaders who load their own 6.5 Grendel ammo. They’re using a new 6.5mm tipped all-copper TAC-TX bullet made for hunting game.

The 6.5mm bullet is 115 grains with a .387 ballistics coefficient and it’s meant to feed, function and perform well with 6.5 Grendel firearms. Because the bullet is purpose-built for 6.5 Grendel it should perform better than a more generic projectile used for higher-velocity cartridges re-purposed for an intermediate round.

With that in mind, the bullet is still meant to be fairly barrier-blind for hunting game even in heavier foliage such as deer and hogs. The bullet balances expansion and weight retention from close range out.

Barnes’ 6.5 Grendel ammo is loaded to SAAMI pressures and specifications to make about 2,600 feet per second at the muzzle with expansion down to 1,400 feet per second or even a little less. The projectiles can be used with other 6.5mm cartridges for improved performance when hunting at long ranges.

The ammo and projectiles are in production and available now from Barnes, with ammo sold in boxes of 20 rounds and bullets in 50-round boxes.

Complete details and specifications will follow when Barnes updates their product page, but pricing looks competitive with other premium all-copper hunting and precision shooting ammunition, with loaded ammo starting around $1.25 per round or less in stores and online.

Barnes is a big supporter of popular alternative loads for AR-pattern rifles chambered for alternative cartridges. Their .300 AAC Blackout ammo and components are very popular for reloading, hunting, and self-defense.

Developing a 6.5 Grendel round is an easy move for the company and it’s great that Barnes didn’t just take any 6.5mm bullets to make their new ammo, instead, taking the time to develop a projectile that excels at 6.5 Grendel ranges and velocities.

The 6.5 Grendel cartridge is a popular target and hunting round for its good ballistics and energy retention downrange compared to a lot of other AR-compatible cartridges.
