Super Suppressed 400 Legend, Winchester’s Polite Hunting Round — SHOT Show 2024

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Winchester’s 400 Legend is the big brother to the now well-known 350 Legend. Though it isn’t new for 2024 and has been around since April of 2023, Winchester has released a new ammo line for the straight-walled, heavy hitter.

Winchester Super Suppressed 300 Grain Open Tip is exactly what it sounds like, a suppressed-shooting specialized ammo.

The 400 Legend has this 300 grain hollow point bullet moving out at 1,060 FPS, which is slower than the speed of sound. Because of this very special speed, it does not make a supersonic “crack” during flight, making things quieter for the shooter or prey.

A box of ammunition is displayed on a shelf that also has loose cartridges sitting on it.
The new 400 Legend ammunition option is intended for suppressed shooting, specifically.

The 300 grain bullet has been shown to penetrate 14-16″ in 20% ballistic gel blocks, which is more than enough for most North American game animals.

Generically speaking, the 400 Legend is claimed to have energy equivalent to the 450 Bushmaster with 20% less recoil, over 20% more energy than a 30-30, and 25% more energy than the 350 Legend with greater penetration.

What else can we compare it to… oh, it also has 100% more energy and 55% less recoil than a 12-gauge slug! All of this data is gathered at a distance of 100 yards, the most common range for hunters to harvest an animal.

A ballistic gel block is displayed, showing the bullet path and penetration of a 300 grain projectile from the 400 Legend.
Here is a ballistic gel block that showcases the superior penetration that the 300-grain, subsonic bullet can provide.

You can expect to see the new Super Suppressed 400 Legend ammo on your local gun store’s shelves within a month. Go out and get your hunting rifle sighted in, but do it quietly!
