New CZ 557 Eclipse -- Just 9!

CZ-USA just announced the updated Model 557 Eclipse bolt-action rifle, with a simplified, lower-priced packaging that still brings a whole lot of features to the table. The CZ 557 is a mid-range hunting rifle so these updates make it appealing to buyers looking for something that’s budget-friendly without going totally entry-level.

At its heart, the CZ 557 Eclipse is built on the same quality barreled push-feed action as more expensive 557 rifles, with a CNC-machined billet receiver and cold hammer-forged, lapped barrel. These parts are built to last for “generations to come.”

For 2020 CZ-USA is offering the Eclipse chambered for three of today’s most popular hunting cartridges, 6.5mm Creedmoor, .308 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield. All three models use a fixed magazine with a hinged floorplate for easy unloading with a 5-round capacity.

All three versions sport a 20.5-inch barrel but only the 6.5mm model is threaded with 5/8×24 threads for a muzzle brake or suppressor. The two .30-caliber models have 1-in-10 twists while the 6.5mm has a 1-in-8 twist. All three also feature adjustable triggers and use a simple push-to-fire safety.

Instead of a wood stock the Eclipse models ship with a glass-filled synthetic stock with the same 557 sporter profile, with a high, straight comb and swept pistol grip. The stock has three sling swivel studs, two at the front and one at the rear for use with a sling and bipod at the same time.

There are a couple of other places where CZ has simplified the 557 to make it more affordable. Obviously the polymer stock is one measure, but additionally the Eclipse’s “bottom metal” is now polymer as well.

Like many hunting rifles at this price point, the Eclipse models don’t have any provisions for iron sights. They require scopes. Instead of having drilled and tapped receivers, the Eclipse models have 19mm dovetails, which CZ says are stronger to begin with and less prone to failure.

CZ-USA offers dovetail rings along with plenty of other manufacturers, so this shouldn’t be much of a limitation for anyone. All combined these tweaks bring the MSRP of all three Eclipse rifles down to $659, with real-world and online pricing typically less.

That leaves a lot of money left over for glass, a sling, maybe a bipod and ammo, even as prices across the board remain a bit unpredictable.

At about 8 pounds without accessories, these are compact, versatile rifles that promise best-in-class accuracy and reliability that come with the CZ name. For more information about the new Eclipse rifles, visit CZ-USA.
