True Pearce spoke with Umarex and took a few shots during SHOT Show 2020.
The AirJavelin is the smaller of the two guns. It’s powered by an 88-gram CO2 canister which yields about 30 shots. That canister provides enough force to shoot a 170-grain arrow at 330 feet per second (120-grain arrow with 50-grain tip). The Umarex rep says he already killed a hog with it.
The arrows slide over the air tube inside the shroud. A CO2 canister attaches under the shroud and is covered by a handguard. The shroud has M-Lok slots, a full-length Picatinny rail, and includes open sights. Its adjustable buttstock helps it fit shooters of any size. Are these really rifles? No, they don’t shoot from a rifled barrel that puts a spin on them. However, arrows are generally made with the vanes set at an angle that induces spin as they fly to stabilize them. It’s certainly an air gun; you can decide if you want to call it a rifle.
The AirSaber is a much larger gun and brings with it much more power. It shoots a 350-grain arrow at 450 feet per second. Using its included scope, Umarex boasts 3″-groups at 100 yards. Comparing it with crossbows, which are capable of similar ballistics, the AirSaber is faster than most.
Arrows slide over the air tube inside a shroud. It’s powered by an on-board air reservoir that you fill at home with a compressor. The reservoir fills to 3,625 psi and you get about 10 shots before the reservoir must be recharged. Once the reservoir is charged and you’re ready to shoot at a target, you load the arrow and then cock the gun. There’s a safety switch in the trigger.
Its scope has stadia lines for various distances. Just put the line for the right distance on target and press the trigger.
